USPS Breast Cancer Research Stamp
|

Fund the Fight. Find a Cure.
Raise money for breast cancer research while showing your support for this very important cause.
The stamp portrays a woman with her right arm raised above her head with the elbow bent. Her left arm is folded across her stomach. This posture is recognized as the position for women to conduct regular breast self-examinations. In addition, the woman is pictured holding a bow in her left hand while reaching for arrows behind her shoulder with her right hand, details suggestive of an Amazon warrior. The Amazons were a mythological race of courageous women warriors who sacrificed a breast to their goddess. The Amazon warrior symbolizes the sacrifices many women undergo in fighting this dreaded disease and the courage necessary to combat it.
In August of 2000 President Clinton signed legislation extending sales of the Breast Cancer Research "semipostal" stamp for another two years. To date the stamp, which costs 40 cents and is good for First-Class postage, has raised over $16 million for research.
In 1997, legislation directed the Postal Service to issue a semipostal stamp that would be valid for postage but would cost an additional amount above the First-Class rate. After recovering reasonable costs, net proceeds from sales of the stamps are earmarked for research organizations. Seventy percent is given to the National Institutes of Health, and 30 percent is given to the Department of Defense. Both organizations were named in the legislation to receive the funds and are leaders in breast cancer research.
The Breast Cancer Research stamp is available at post offices across the country, online at www.stampsonline.com and by calling toll-free 1 800 STAMP-24. |
