Voices in the Wind
On August 30, 2000, fifty people gathered at Angel Beach Recording Studios in Minneapolis to participate in an innovative new Portage forYouth program, the Sing-Along Recording Session. Recording "Voices In The Wind" allowed women and girls from all walks of life to learn a song and record it in a professional recording studio. The Portage sent out more than 200 invitations to women's and girl's organizations nation-wide to participate in the session. Fifty women and girls showed up to leam, and then sing and record the chorus of this song about the power of listening to a child's voice. The joy of the singing, combined with the accomplishment of learning the song, was only surpassed by hearing the final product. For many, it was a dream come true.
True to the Portage magic, an up-and-coming new rap group, Bar None, was checking out the studio the night they were mixing. On the spur of the moment they agreed to lend their voices. Each of these young men has a daughter, and serendipitously added his hopes and dreams for her. They are the voices of the fathers who can make the peace.
