What is Newborns in Need?
In the summer of 1992, Carol Green of Houston, Missouri was dismayed to learn that many babies went without essentials such as warm blankets and bedding, soft cuddly clothing, and sometimes, when a child would lose it's fight for life, hospital staff would have to bury them in paper sacks due to lack of burial garments, and in some cases, because of their tiny sizes when they were born premature.
Babies born into poverty, or to mothers who were faced with unexpected parenthood and can't care properly for their children, suffer. Much of that suffering is unnecessary, what was needed was for someone to let others know of the need and to organize them into constructive groups to combat the problem in their own communities.
Mrs. Green started making calls to area hospitals, adoption agencies, crisis centers and homeless shelters to find out how she could help. The demand for baby items amazed her. Just one week later, on 7 July 1992, she created "Newborns In Need", the name suggested by her husband for the new organization she started for the babies she loves so much.. She began recruiting people from the local community to aide in her efforts and after years of running Newborns in Need only in Missouri, in March of 1998, Newborns In Need incorporated and became a 501 (c) 3 charity with the help of the local United States RC&D office.
Newborns in Need, Inc. can now issue tax deductible receipts and with chapters across the United States and volunteers from other countries, is reaching many more of God's tiniest children that need help than ever before.
Mrs. Green has taken Newborns in Need from the humble beginning of sewing in her own home and enlisting the help of her husband and 6 children to making Newborns in Need a large organization with many chapters all across the U.S. and sewing groups in other countries. She is still very actively involved in the adminstration of NIN, serving in the volunteer position of NIN National President, and serves on the national board of directors. She states that "only through the power and hand of God could such a wonderful miracle have occured in bringing help and hope to many babies and families wherever they may be" She is so grateful for the dedicated volunteers that have stayed faithfully through the growing pains and is so excited to see new volunteers flock daily to the cause.
Newborns in Need enters the new millenium with a bright future and plans to continue to expand their areas of service with God's help and all the loving hearts and hands that make up the NIN organization. |
