Introduction by Christine Gardner

This month’s charity is one that is very special to me. When I was a freshman in college I met a girl named Larisa. We lived on the same floor in our dorm and became fast friends. We had similar senses of humor and we both felt a little unsure being away from home for the first time. Larisa’s pain was far greater than mine as she learned that her brother Michael was suffering from manic depression, or bipolar disorder.

Not knowing a thing about this illness myself, I quickly saw how devastating it could be for not just the individual, but the family as well. Through Larisa, I was also made aware of how many people suffer from this illness.

Michael lived a successful and happy life until several months ago when he passed away unexpectedly. Upon his death, Larisa decided to start this foundation in her brother’s name. She hopes to reach out to the many individuals and families who are dealing with many of the same troubles that Michael and her family had experienced.

October is Mental Health Awareness Month so please consider this wonderful foundation for your gracious donations.

Thank you,

Christine

Michael's Journals Foundation as described by Larisa, Michael's sister.

"My wish is that all who suffer from mental illness be introduced to my brother Michael who so valiantly and bravely lived with and managed his illness.  With the love and support of his family, he conquered and never succumbed to his illness.  His life is truly one of beauty and inspiration to any individual or family who is touched by mental illness.  It is possible to manage and succeed despite the daily battle with manic depression."

On May 2, 2002, the world lost Michael Petriano.  Only one day after his passing, knowing that his memory must live on, his family and friends came together and formed Michael’s Journals Foundation.  Michael touched everyone who knew him and it is their vision that Michael’s Journals Foundation will continue to do just that.  One of Michael’s last wishes was to help others who are suffering and it is the mission of the Foundation to see it to fruition.
