It is our intention to incorporate original artwork in future publications.
A GENERATION FOR CHANGE
Show Breakdown:
Through entertaining Broadway-like productions filled with upbeat choreographed dance routines and the universal language of music, The Kids for Kids Project travels to schools and communities throughout the country educating children and their families about Duchenne, genetic disorders and physical disabilities. The goal of this unique educational outreach program is to foster greater awareness and understanding of these problems while encouraging compassion, kindness and inclusion.
The music and script of A GENERATION FOR CHANGE sends a very positive message, promoting kindness, compassion and inclusion. The story revolves around a character named Patrick, a spunky 14 year old who is not present at the Kids for Kids Project Club meeting on this particular day because he has gone to get his new wheelchair. We find out through fun and conversational dialogue that Patrick is in a wheelchair because he has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Through this dialogue we get to know each of the cast members and learn more about some of the following topics.
Some topics that are covered are:
Wheelchairs
"How Do You Get Where You're Going" - a song that teaches that a wheelchair is just a different mode of transportation.
Genetics
"The DNA Rap" - a rap song that explains the basic fundamentals of DNA and gene structure and touching on the subject of what makes us each unique.
Self-Esteem
"ItÕs OK To Do Things Differently" - a bright and lively song that teaches the value of being your own person. This song encourages children to accept everyone for who they are.
Peer Pressure
"Peer Pressure" - a good vs. evil song that touches on under-age smoking and drinking, skipping school and cheating. Done in a Rock nÕ Roll style, this song is very appealing to kids.
Physical Therapy Needs
"Work It Out" - a song that stresses the importance of good physical health. It leads us through a stretching type of warm up.
Kindness and Inclusion
"We Can Be Kind" and "Help Is On The Way" - both songs teach the value of kindness and friendship and treating each other with respect. Both songs are very hopeful and melodic tunes.
The cast interacts with the audience getting them involved in the music and helping them to feel part of the "Kids for Kids Project Club". We find that the audience really listens to the music and not only enjoys the tunes and dance numbers, but hears the messages and lessons that are being taught. We have found that children will listen to other children. They find it more "cool" to participate if they see children leading the way. It is a very fun approach towards teaching inclusion.
