Building on a Vision
The concept of a community center developed out of a unique experiment in neighboring. Families with children were in need of more livable housing. A group of citizens gathered around these families, buying and refurbishing houses, then making them available at affordable rental prices. It took thousands of volunteer hours, generous finandal supporl. and willingness to establish new personal relationships.
In this experience of neighboring,9 it was learned that families were often hindered from getting ahead because they could not afford child care. It was also learned that many people had no private health insurance and did not qualify for government health care programs. They had no primaiy health care a very difficult situation for both children and adults.
A vision was born a vision of affordable child care and health care for alt a vision of parents moving ahead in their jobs or finishing their educational goals. It was a vision of people with chronic neglected illnesses receiving help without regard to their inability to pay.
An opportunity presented itself and was seized. Property was purchased and beautifully prepared for its new use. Hilltop Neighborhood House was born in the fall of 7996, and the vision became a reality
It took a whole village to make it come true, and it will take the whole village" to sustain it. Hilltop Neighborhood House was built on a foundation of neighboring. With the continued support of our whole community families are claiming the promise of a better and brighter tomorrow. |
