THE STORY OF ANGEL FLIGHT, NE WHAT IS ANGEL FLIGHT AND WHO ARE OUR PATIENTS?
Angel Flight Northeast is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, tax-exempt organization that provides free air transportation to patients and their families needing medical treatment whose financial resources would not otherwise enable them to receive care. We are also a vital mode of transportation for organs, blood and for patients awaiting organ transplants, and for patients who may live in rural areas without access to commercial airlines. We will also provide "compassion flights." We are there whenever there is a compelling human need.
Founded in 1996 by Larry Camerlin, Angel Flight operates under FAA rules and regulations. We've made thousands of flights and have flown over 3 million miles since we have been in operation. Approximately 47% of our patients are children suffering from cancer, severe burns, crippling diseases or are in need of surgery. While we primarily serve residents in the northeast, we provide flights for people as far north as Maine, as far west as Minnesota and as far South as Florida and Louisiana, and have never turned away a request to fly a patient to a hospital.
WHAT IS OUR MISSION?
To facilitate access to healthcare by arranging and providing free air transportation via private aircraft by volunteer pilots. Service is provided on a non-emergency basis for medically stable and ambulatory patients and their families. Emergency flights are reserved strictly for organ transplant patients, blood and organ donations.
HOW DO WE DO WHAT WE DO?
Angel Flight is largely a volunteer organization. Over 600 volunteer pilots donate their time, flying skills, fuel and resources. Earth Angels provide ground transportation for our patients via their own private vehicles to and from hospitals. Pilots have contributed over 3.5 million dollars of donated services, and individuals and corporations have given Angel Flight one-half million dollars worth of in-kind donations. Our small staff of mission coordinators runs the day to day operations of the organization. The Airport Commission of the city of Lawrence, MA, donated space for our headquarters at the Lawrence Municipal Airport in North Andover, and over 51 union members and 16 businesses donated all the labor and materials to make our office a reality.
HOW WELL DO WE DO IT?
Angel Flight has significantly improved access to healthcare for hundreds of people. In 1999, we received "The Special Lewis Hine Award for Innovation in the Service of Children" by the National Child Labor Committee, and the Angel Flight NE's Founder and President, Larry Camerlin, was recognized with the "Hero Among Us" Award by the Boston Celtics and Boston Globe. Camerlin was also named "America's Finest Public Benefit Flying Executive of the Year" by the Air Care Alliance in 1998. Angel Flight NE was also awarded the "National George Washington Medal of Honor" by the Freedom Foundation in 1997 and the "Humanitarian of the Year Award" in 1996 presented by the New England Chapter of the American Association of Airport Executives.
Angel Flight NE has been featured nationally on CNN Headline News and on CNBC, and regionally on news broadcasts including Boston's ABC, NBC and CBS affiliates, New England Cable News, Channel 5 in Bangor, Maine, Channel 12, Channel 6 and Fox News in Providence, RI, and Channel 9 in Manchester, NH. Special presentations of Angel Flight have also been on WGBH Public Television and WCVB's "Chronicle". In their August 2000 Best of Boston edition, Boston magazine named Angel Flight a "Boston Cares About Boston" beneficiary.
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
Your contributions and support are essential for the continuation of Angel Flight NE. We use donations to pay for the expense of our toll free 800 number that our patients use to reach us, our mandatory orientation program which we conduct for new volunteer pilots, the development of our pilot recruitment programs, patient outreach, mission coordination and public education programs. With your investment in Angel Flight, we will be able to grow to meet the pressing demand and continue to provide free transportation to healthcare facilities for our patients and their families who turn to us for help at the most frightening and critical time of their lives.
